Healing From Disordered Eating
Disordered eating and eating disorders can often feel isolating, confusing, and overwhelming to understand and come to terms with. I have had so many people sit in my office and say “I am not skinny enough” or “I just forgot to eat” and therefore feel like “it’s not a big deal” and “it’s normal” to go through the day with these pervasive thoughts around food and body. In a society obsessed with health and thinness, it is hard to know what is right and what isn’t.
And- a lot of times underneath these thoughts and questions are shame; shame around our bodies, shame around our thoughts about food and body image, and shame around the way we interact with food. Maybe for you that looks like eating small amounts during the day and then feeling “out of control” at night. Maybe that looks like skipping meals when anxiety is high. And maybe that looks like purging food when it feels like “too much”. You are not alone!
It is hard to navigate these things all on your own, and it might feel overwhelming to open up to someone about your thoughts around food and body image. You might feel caught between the desire for control and the need for peace.
In therapy, we explore the emotional roots of your relationship with food and body image. I work to understand the bigger picture about what is going on in your life. Maybe there’s stress around work, school, a relationship, or parents. Maybe there is unresolved trauma that is contributing to these feelings. Eating disorders and disordered eating can make us feel like “it’s my fault” and “I should have more self control” but that is simply not true!
At Counseling with Colleen, I can help unpack all of the noise that is contributing to these thoughts, feelings, and patterns. My approach is non-judgmental and holistic — focusing on healing the mind, body, and heart. I help clients:
Notice and Name their eating disorder/ disordered eating voice
Challenge unhelpful thought patterns
Rebuild trust in their bodies
Learn tools for emotional regulation and self-care
You deserve a life where food doesn’t control your thoughts — where you can experience nourishment, joy, and connection again.
